Math story word problems generator

Tell Sparky the skill and what your students care about. Sparky writes math word problems set in those interests, with numbers that check out and a worked answer key, ready to print or send to Google Docs or Word.

A teacher asks Sparky for soccer fraction word problems to print and gets a first draft right away: six problems on adding and subtracting fractions, while Sparky asks whether 4th grade is right and offers to mix in other interests

Used by 250,000+ teachers, and built to FERPA, COPPA and GDPR standards.

How the word problem generator works

  1. Name the skill and the interest

Type the skill and what your class is into, like "soccer fraction word problems to print". If you leave something out, Sparky usually asks about your students' interests, how many problems and which numbers to use before it writes.

  2. Check the problems

The problems open in a document beside the chat, with the answer key on its own page. Ask for changes like "make problem 4 a two-step problem", and Sparky edits the same document.

  3. Hand them out

Print a copy for each student, or save the problems as a Google Doc or Word file for your class page.

What you can put in a word problem set

  • Your students' interests

Name a sport, a hobby, a book, or your town, and the problems happen there. Mix two interests on one sheet so every student finds one of theirs.

  • Numbers that check out

Sparky is told to keep quantities, units and answers consistent with the story, so a recipe doesn't call for 40 cups of flour.

  • Everything needed, nothing extra

Each problem gives students the numbers they need and asks one clear question, unless you ask for extra information to sort through.

  • A worked answer key

The key shows each step, like 3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4 = 1 1/4, so you can see where a student went wrong.

  • One skill or a mix

Practice one skill, such as adding fractions with like denominators, or mix this unit's skill with earlier ones.

  • Math set properly

Fractions, mixed numbers and equations are typeset in the document, and Sparky uses a calculator for the arithmetic.

Ways teachers use it

  • Practice after a lesson

A short set on the skill you just taught, so students see it in a story the same day.

  • Problems about your class

Problems built on what your students talk about, from a favorite team to a class pet.

  • Two-step problems

Problems where students have to find one number before they can answer the question.

  • Easier reading, same math

Short sentences and familiar words for students still learning English, with the same numbers as the rest of the class.

What teachers say about Flint

  • "Students can just explore a passion topic of their choice and can go as deep into the knowledge as they can comprehend. This gives me a chance to see how they think, what motivates them to learn, and makes me know more about each of my students."

Frequently asked questions

Is the word problem generator free?

Yes, it's free for teachers, and there's no limit on how many word problems you can make.

Does it come with an answer key?

Yes. The key is separate from the problems and shows the work for each answer, so you can print the problems without it.

Why does Sparky ask about my students first?

The tool is built to set problems in contexts your students know or care about, so Sparky usually asks about their interests, how many problems you want and which numbers to use. Put those in your first message, as in "soccer fraction word problems to print", and Sparky starts writing.

Can I get the problems as a worksheet to print?

Yes. Ask for something to print or a document, and the problems open in a document beside the chat with buttons to copy, print, open as a Google Doc or download as a Word file. Without that, Sparky may write the problems in the chat. For a PDF, pick Save as PDF from the Download menu.

Will the numbers in the stories make sense?

Sparky is told to make the quantities, units and answers fit the story and each other, and it does arithmetic with a calculator instead of guessing. Read the problems before you hand them out, as you would anything you didn't write.

How do I write a good word problem?

Give students every number they need and nothing that changes the answer, set it somewhere they recognize, and ask one clear question. That is what the tool is told to do, so you can ask Sparky to explain why a problem works or rewrite one that doesn't.

Learning feels different when it fits you.
