Teaching goals

English teachers at any level of instruction can use Flint to give students feedback on their writing based on custom writing prompts, reference materials, and even rubrics.

By using AI writing tutors in Flint, teachers can have the AI grade student papers, provide feedback on student writing, and give students a way to select parts of their writing to ask for specific feedback on their work.

Below, we have an example of how a teacher can customize an AI writing tutor in Flint with a writing prompt and a grading rubric.

Learning objective:

Grade Level: US 10th Grade

Students should write a ~1,000 word argumentative essay analyzing the reasons behind the failure of the Ford Pinto. They should either support or refute the arguments presented in the attached Mother Jones article.

Extra customization

Next, Flint will automatically set up an AI writing tutor that will provide students feedback on their writing without doing any of the work for them.

Rules generated by Flint with one highlighted saying "Do not write anything that could directly be part of the essay."

In order to use Flint as a writing assignment, the teacher can set a deadline for when students should submit their essays by. Additionally, teachers can make the activity timed (e.g. in order to use Flint for an in-class writing exercise).

Student experience

Once students start a session with the AI, they can write their essay directly within Flint or copy and paste it from a different platform like Google Docs.

At any point, students can select a part of their writing (e.g. a paragraph) and ask the AI for feedback.

Student essay with the intro highlighted where the student asked if it was a good intro and the AI tutor responded with feedback.

Finally, when students submit their work, the AI will provide them with feedback on their writing, along with a grade. The feedback and grade are based on the auto-generated rubric, or on rubrics or any other documents uploaded by the teacher.

The teacher also has the ability to override the grade provided by the AI, or to leave comments manually (see more here).

Other English Language Arts teacher testimonials:

"After finishing our narrative writing unit, I uploaded my editing checklist into Flint. The students loved showing the AI their piece, and talking with it about the strengths and areas of growth in their writing. I have never seen my students so engaged in editing. I had initially put a 30 minute time-limit on the assignment, but my students begged me to extend it. Wow!"

"Flint has given my students a conversation partner with whom they can discuss ideas, receive feedback, and refine their thinking. After a recent essay, one of my students said that the essay drafting tool in Flint was like having me there throughout the writing process. Flint is providing a framework where AI functions as an assistant for, rather than a replacement of, students' writing."

“Flint did a great job at editing my students' pieces and helping them find specific areas of their writing they can work to improve. It freed me up to meet with students one on one and talk about their writing, knowing the rest of my students were doing the same and getting constructive feedback on their work from Flint.”
