The Buzzer Beater board during a Quick Buzz round: Buzzers open with a big orange Tap Orange button on the left, and a Who was first list on the right with Zoe M. first and answering, then Noah K. 0.08 seconds later, Ava P. and Leo C., a note of 2 false starts and 1 wrong color, and Reset, Wrong, next in line and Correct buttons at the bottom.

Find out who was really first

When every hand goes up at once, it's hard to tell who was first, and the same quick students get every turn. Buzzer Beater puts the order on the board. Students join on their own phone or Chromebook, you open the buzzers, and the board lists who tapped first, second and third. It measures each device's network delay, so a slow Chromebook on school Wi-Fi isn't pushed to the back of the line. When you want the whole class to answer at once, switch to Live Quiz. All of it is free, with no sign-up and no AI.

How Buzzer Beater works

  1. The Buzzer Beater teacher Home under Start a game, with two cards: Quick Buzz, No questions. Find out who's first, with Start now and Settings buttons, and Live Quiz, Your questions. Everyone answers by color, with a + New quiz button. Below are Quizzes, Classes and a Practice game link.

Pick Quick Buzz or Live Quiz

Home has two cards. Quick Buzz has no questions and finds out who's first. Live Quiz plays your own questions, and everyone answers by color. To see it all before your class does, start a practice game with pretend students.

  2. The board before a game starts: Go to flintk12.com/buzzer and enter, a large 6-digit join code and a QR code on the left, and 8 of 8 here with eight student names on the right, above a Start button.

    Students join with a code

Put the board up. Students go to flintk12.com/buzzer on any phone, tablet or Chromebook and enter the 6-digit code, or scan the QR code. No roster is needed: students type their name, and names with blocked words are turned away. If you save a class roster, students tap their name instead.

  3. A Quick Buzz round after a wrong answer: Zoe M. is crossed out with Not quite, Noah K. is now answering, and Ava P. and Leo C. wait next in line.

Open the buzzers and mark C or X

Press Space to open the buzzers. Each round the board names a color, blue or orange, and the two buttons switch places on students' screens. Tapping too early or tapping the wrong color puts a student out for the round. Press C if the answer is right or X if it isn't, and the next student in line is up.

  4. A Live Quiz question on the board: Which planet is this?, a picture of a ringed planet, four colored answers (Saturn, Mars, Neptune and Venus), a countdown timer and a count of how many students have answered.

    Ask a Live Quiz question

Each question has 2 to 4 answer choices, each with its own color and shape, and a timer of 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds. Students tap a color on their own screen. The board shows the countdown and how many students have answered, never who picked what.

What's in Buzzer Beater

Paste a whole quiz at once

Paste questions from a doc, slides or a spreadsheet, or from a Kahoot or Quizlet export. Mark the right answer with a * or write Answer: under the question. You can also type questions one at a time and add a picture, which shows on the board.

The Paste many at once window in the quiz editor, with numbered questions about cells pasted in and the right answers marked with a *, a note that 4 questions were found, and an Add 4 questions button.

See how the class answered

When time's up, the board shows how many students picked each answer and marks the right one. Faster right answers earn more points, up to 1000, and the top 5 come up after each question. The game ends on a podium, and every student sees their own place on their screen.

Run it from the front of the room

Every button on the board has a key, so you can run a game from the laptop on the projector. To walk around the room instead, choose Add your phone as a remote and scan the code with your own phone.

Built for the classroom

  • Taps less than 0.05 seconds apart show as a tie, so the board never guesses.
  • Fresh voices, on unless you turn it off, moves students who already got one right to the back of the line, so more students get a turn.
  • Quick Buzz scoring can be off, +1 for a right answer, or +1 for right and −1 for wrong.
  • Every color also has a shape, so students who are color-blind can tell the buttons apart.
  • On a Chromebook or laptop, students can buzz with the F and J keys.
  • If a student's connection drops, they come back to the same seat and score.

No accounts, and no student data to manage

Buzzer Beater needs no accounts for you or your students. Your private teacher link opens your classes and quizzes, so bookmark it and keep it to yourself. Names that students type are used for that game only and are never saved. If you save a class, Buzzer Beater keeps first names and last initials only. Student devices and answers are never stored, and quiz pictures appear only on the board.

Buzzer Beater questions

What is Buzzer Beater?

A free classroom buzzer and live quiz. Students join on their own phone, tablet or Chromebook with a code, and the board shows who tapped first or how the class answered.

What grades is it for?

Any grade where students can use a phone, tablet or Chromebook, from elementary school through 12th grade. The board runs on any laptop connected to a projector or smartboard.

How does it know who was first?

When a device joins, Buzzer Beater measures its network delay and lines up its clock with the game. Each tap is timed on the student's device and checked against that delay, so a slow connection doesn't push a student back, and changing a device's clock doesn't help.

What stops students from tapping early?

Each round the board names blue or orange, and the buttons switch places on students' screens. Tapping before the buzzers open, or tapping the wrong color, puts a student out for that round.

How are Live Quiz points scored?

A right answer earns up to 1000 points, and the faster it comes, the more it's worth. A right answer just before time runs out earns 500. A wrong answer earns nothing.

Can I use questions from Kahoot or Quizlet?

Yes. Export the questions, then paste them into Paste many at once in the quiz editor. Questions from a doc, slides or a spreadsheet work too.

Can I run it from my phone?

Yes. Before the game starts, choose Add your phone as a remote on the board and scan the code with your phone. In Quick Buzz the remote shows who's answering, with big Wrong and Correct buttons. In Live Quiz it shows you the answer and lets you move to the next question. It works for that one game only.

Do students need accounts?

No. There are no accounts or sign-ins for you or your students. Students type their name, or tap it if you've saved a class.

Does Buzzer Beater use AI?

No. Buzzer Beater doesn't use AI. You write or paste every question.
