Show of Hands for Period 3 Biology: a grid of 24 student name tiles, 14 of 24 heard today, counted students in color with their counts, one student out at the bathroom with a timer, and the Count a hand, Send out and Mark absent buttons at the bottom.

Hear from every student, not just the same five

Most participation trackers make you hunt for a student before you can mark them. Show of Hands puts the whole class on one screen: one tap counts a hand, and the students you haven't heard from yet stand out. When you call on someone, the picker can choose only from students who haven't spoken. When a student leaves the room, a timer runs until they're back, and a weekly report shows how much class time each student missed.

How Show of Hands works

  1. The Paste your class list screen with a gradebook paste of last names, first names and student IDs on the left, and 24 cleaned-up name chips on the right under notes that it flipped 24 Last, First names, skipped a header row and is showing two Jordans as Jordan B. and Jordan K.

    Paste your class list

Paste names from a spreadsheet, your gradebook or an email, or upload a CSV. Show of Hands flips Last, First names, skips header rows and ID numbers, and tells two students with the same first name apart. To look around first, start with a class of made-up students.

  2. The Send out sheet for a student, with places such as Bathroom, Water, Nurse, Office, Counselor, Speech, RTI and Library, nudge times of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes, a custom option, and a Start timer button.

Send a student out and time it

Switch the bottom bar to Send out and tap a name. Pick where they're going (bathroom, water, nurse, office, counselor, speech, RTI, library or your own), and choose when to get a nudge. When they come back, Catch up lists exactly what time they missed.

  3. The Pick someone sheet over the class grid, set to New voice, showing Nora picked with the note Not heard yet today, and buttons for Answered, count it, Pass and Again.

    Pick someone fairly

Pick someone chooses a student who hasn't been heard yet today, anyone at random, or leans toward the focus groups you set, such as students building confidence. Answered counts the hand for you.

  4. Board view for Period 3 Biology showing 14 of 24 hands heard today and 10 more voices to go, a grid of first names with heard students raised in color, and Hall pass in use with a timer.

Put the class on the board

Board view shows how many students have been heard today and how many voices are left, with first names only. Turn on Only not yet to show just the students who haven't spoken, and pick from them on the big screen.

What's in Show of Hands

See who's been quiet

Insights shows the share of the class you hear from on a typical day, a trend across recent class days, and the students who haven't spoken in three or more class days. The day-by-day grid shows every student's count, and Export for gradebook saves a CSV for any week, month or term.

The Participation tab of Insights: You're hearing from 60% of the class on a typical day, a line chart of the share heard each day, a Gone quiet list with two students and + Focus buttons, and a day-by-day grid of counts.

Time out of class, every week

The Time out of class report adds up each student's minutes out of the room for the week, split by place, and shows it in class periods. Students who missed a full period or more are flagged. Scheduled pull-outs like speech and RTI are shown but never flagged.

The Time out of class report: 1 student missed a full class period or more this week, with bars for each student split by bathroom, nurse and speech, minutes out, trips and class periods, and one student flagged at 1.2 class periods.

Built for the classroom

  • Names stay in the same place while you tap, so you never chase a moving tile.
  • Undo takes back the last tap, and every count shows up as a short message you can undo.
  • Each student has a page with their participation by day and their trips out of the room, ready to print for a parent or IEP meeting.
  • Make a class for each period and switch between them from the menu at the top.
  • Start with a class of made-up students and four weeks of made-up history to see Insights before you add your own.

No accounts, and names stay on your device

Show of Hands needs no accounts and sends nothing to Flint. Student names, counts and trips are saved only in the browser on the device you use. Focus groups and hall pass details never appear on the board. Download a backup from Settings to keep a copy or to move to another device.

Show of Hands questions

What is Show of Hands?

A free classroom participation tracker. Tap a student's name to count a hand, see who hasn't spoken yet, pick students fairly, and time trips out of the room.

What grades is it for?

Any grade from kindergarten through 12th grade. It works on a phone you carry around the room, a tablet, a laptop or the board.

How does the picker choose a student?

New voice picks only from students who haven't been heard yet today. Random gives everyone an equal chance. Focus leans toward the focus groups you choose. Students who are absent or out of the room are never picked.

Can I use it for participation grades?

Yes. Export for gradebook in Insights saves a CSV with each student's participations, days heard and class days present for the week, month or term.

Can it time bathroom trips?

Yes. Send a student out, pick the place and a nudge time, and a timer runs until you tap Back. The weekly Time out of class report shows how long each student was out and where they went.

What does the board show?

First names, who has been heard today and how many voices are left. Counts, focus groups and the names of students who are out of the room never appear on the board.

Does each day start fresh?

Yes. Today resets every morning, and every day is kept, so Insights shows the whole term.

Do students need accounts?

No. There are no accounts or sign-ins for you or your students.

Where is student information saved?

Only in the browser on the device you use. Nothing is sent to Flint. Download a backup in Settings to keep a copy or to move your classes to another device.
