Free brag sheet templates

  • Student brag sheet

For you to fill in and give to each teacher or counselor writing you a letter. It asks about your applications, their class, your activities, three words that describe you and your goals.

  • Parent brag sheet

For a parent or guardian to fill in about you, usually for your school counselor. In Flint, Sparky makes the form with your name on it, ready for your parent to fill in.

What goes on a student brag sheet

These are the questions on the student template. Your school's own form may ask them in a different order.

  • About you

Your name, grade, school and email, who is writing the letter and what you want to study.

  • Where you're applying

Each college, program or scholarship, its deadline, and how the letter is sent: through the Common App, by email or another way.

  • Your recommender's class

Which class you took with them and when, a moment in that class you're proud of, and what you learned or how you grew.

  • Academics

The subjects that interest you most and why, plus any honors, awards or test scores you want mentioned.

  • Activities, work and service

Clubs, sports, arts, jobs, volunteering and family responsibilities, with your role, the grades you did it, hours per week and what you did.

  • Three words that describe you

Three words, each with an example a teacher could put in a letter. "Patient: I tutor my brother in math every night" says more than "patient".

  • A challenge you faced

What happened and what you did about it. A recommender can explain a hard semester only if they know about it.

  • Your goals and anything else

What you want to do after high school, and anything your transcript doesn't show, such as caring for siblings or a job that cut into study time.

What goes on a parent brag sheet

A parent or guardian answers nine questions about you. Counselors read it for what teachers can't see at school.

  • Five words that describe you

Five words, with an example of one or two, from the person who has known you longest.

  • Accomplishments and growth

Your biggest accomplishments in the last three years, inside or outside school, and where they have seen you grow the most.

  • What makes you stand out

What sets you apart from other students your age, and how you handled a challenge or a hard time.

  • Responsibilities and plans

Your responsibilities at home, at work or in the community, what you want to do after high school, and anything that affected your grades.

How to fill in a brag sheet with Sparky

  1. Say who the letter is from

Type one line, such as "help me fill out a brag sheet for my chem teacher". Attach your activities list or resume if you have one.

  2. Answer Sparky's questions

Sparky asks about what your list leaves out, such as a moment from that class. Answer in a line or two, and Sparky adds it to the same brag sheet.

  3. Download it

The brag sheet opens beside the chat. Download it as a Word file, open it in Google Docs, or print it, then give it to your recommender.

A brag sheet example, filled in with Sparky

Mia Torres, a made-up senior, attached her activities list and asked Sparky for a brag sheet for her chemistry teacher. These parts come from the brag sheet Sparky wrote in Flint.

  • What Mia gave Sparky

A one-page activities list with five activities and two honors, then one line: "It's for Ms. Rivera. Chem clicked when I explained equilibrium to friends, so I started the review sessions. I want to study nursing."

  • Her activities

"AP Chemistry review sessions — Organizer, Grade 11: About 2 hours a week from March to May; ran weekly after-school sessions for 12 classmates before the AP exam."

  • A moment from class

"One moment that stands out is when I was explaining equilibrium to my friends and realized it was clicking for me too — breaking it down for someone else was what made it stick."

  • What Mia checked

Sparky's first version said the idea clicked for her friends. Mia corrected it in one line and Sparky fixed that paragraph. She still had to add the date and her name.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brag sheet?

A brag sheet is a page or two about your activities, accomplishments and goals that you give to a teacher or counselor who is writing you a recommendation letter. It gives them specific examples to put in the letter.

What goes on a brag sheet?

Where you're applying and the deadlines, your activities with your role and hours, your honors, a moment from your recommender's class, three words that describe you with examples, and your goals. The student template on this page has a place for each.

Is a brag sheet the same as a resume?

No. A resume lists what you've done. A brag sheet is written for one recommender and adds what a resume leaves out, such as a moment from their class or why an activity mattered to you. You can attach your resume to it.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word templates are free to download, and Flint is free for students. If your school doesn't use Flint and you're 13 or older (16 in the EU), sign up at app.flintk12.com and choose Student. If your school limits personal chats for your grade, use the Word template.

Can I use the template in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the Word file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. A brag sheet you make with Sparky has its own Open in Google Docs button, next to the Word download.

Will Sparky make things up about me?

Sparky writes from your activities list and your answers, and leaves a marked blank for anything it doesn't know yet, such as a moment from class. Read the brag sheet before you send it and change anything that doesn't sound like you.

I'm writing the letter. How do I use a brag sheet?

Ask the student for one using these templates, then use the letter of recommendation template: attach the brag sheet and Sparky drafts the letter from it.
