AI tutor

Tell Sparky what you're studying and where it stopped making sense. Sparky asks what you already know, then gives hints and examples until you can work it out yourself.

A student tells Sparky they don't get slope. Sparky explains slope in one sentence, then asks how much y and x go up between the points (0, 1) and (2, 5)

How the AI tutor works

  1. Say where you're stuck

Type the topic, such as "I don't get slope", or send a photo of the problem. Name the class or the test if there is one. If you only name a topic, Sparky may ask what you're studying first.

  2. Answer Sparky's questions

Sparky asks a question or two to find the exact step that stopped making sense. Then it gives a hint, explains the idea a new way, or works a similar example with different numbers.

  3. Do the last step yourself

Try the step and send your answer. Sparky tells you what you got right, points to the part that went wrong, and gives you another try before it explains more.

What the AI tutor can do

  • Hints before answers

Small hints first, bigger ones if you're still stuck. Sparky won't write the answer to an assigned problem for you.

  • Examples with new numbers

Sparky works through a problem like yours with different numbers, so you see the method and still get to solve your own.

  • Math checked with a calculator

Sparky works out the arithmetic with a calculator, including when it checks your answer.

  • Diagrams and graphs

Ask for a picture, such as a labeled cell or the graph of a line, and Sparky makes one to go with its explanation.

  • Patterns in your graded work

Attach a graded test or your teacher's comments. Sparky finds the mistakes you keep making and gives you practice on those.

  • Talking instead of typing

Press the microphone and say your question out loud. Press Listen under a reply to hear Sparky read it.

Ways students use it

  • Stuck on homework

Send the problem and what you've tried. Sparky finds where you went off track without doing the problem for you.

  • A lesson that didn't click

Tell Sparky what the class covered today. It explains the idea in a different way and checks that you've got it.

  • Going over a graded test

Attach the marked test. Sparky goes through each question you missed and helps you fix it yourself.

  • Feedback on a draft

Paste your essay. Sparky says what works, asks questions about the weak parts and leaves the rewriting to you.

What teachers say about Flint

  • "I saw engagement in a high school math classroom like never before. My students look at this AI platform as a safe place to ask a personalized question that they did not necessarily feel like asking out loud or have the time to ask me personally."

  • "Flint allowed students to ask questions about molecules they did not understand or pathways that were unfamiliar. They had a personal tutor to guide them through complex material at their pace and level of understanding."

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI tutor free?

Yes, it's free for students. If your school doesn't use Flint, you can sign up yourself at app.flintk12.com and choose Student, as long as you're old enough where you live (13 in the US and UK).

What does an AI tutor do?

It works through a subject with you one step at a time. Sparky asks what you already know, finds the step where you got lost, and gives a hint, a new explanation or a similar example until you can do that step yourself. To compare Flint with other AI tutors, see the best AI tutors for students.

Will Sparky just give me the answers?

No. On a student account, Sparky won't solve your assigned problems or write work you'd hand in. It asks what you've tried, points to where your reasoning went wrong, and lets you finish. When your answer is right, Sparky tells you so.

Can I send a photo of my homework?

Yes. Press Take a photo in the message box, or attach a PDF, a Word file, slides or a screenshot, or import a file from Google Drive or OneDrive. Sparky reads the problem from the file and works through it with you.

Does AI tutoring work?

Students who have tried it say it helps. In a mid-semester survey of about 500 students in Harvard's intro computer science course, CS50, 73% called the course's AI tools helpful or very helpful. Those tools were built to guide students toward answers instead of giving them out, as Sparky does. We wrote about that study and a second one on AI feedback in The results are in: AI tutoring works.

Can my teacher see my chats?

If you use Flint through your school, yes. Your school's admins can find any chat, and teachers can see the chats in their classes and activities. Sparky also flags messages about safety, such as bullying or self-harm, so an adult at your school can follow up.

Can a teacher set up the AI tutor for a whole class?

Yes. Teachers can give Sparky their own instructions for a class and read how each student worked through it. See the AI chatbot for students, which a teacher sets up as a class activity, or how to give every student a personal tutor.
