    3 by 3 choice board

Nine numbered squares, one activity in each, with a line for your directions, and places for the student's name, the squares they chose and the due date.

What goes on a choice board

A choice board gives students several ways to practice the same skill and lets them pick. These are the parts teachers decide.

  • Nine activities

Each square is one activity on the same skill or unit, such as drawing a model, writing a word problem or making a comic that teaches the idea.

  • The rule for choosing

Pick any three in a row, one from each row, or enough squares to reach a point total. Write the rule on the directions line.

  • Different ways to show it

Mix drawing, writing, building and explaining aloud, so students who struggle with one way can still show what they know.

  • Points and a due date

Harder squares can be worth more. Students record the squares they chose, and the due date sits at the bottom of the board.

A choice board example, made with Sparky

A teacher asked for a fractions board in a new chat, then asked for points. These parts come from the board Sparky made in Flint.

  • What the teacher typed

"Make a 3 by 3 choice board for 5th grade fractions", with no unit plan or file. Sparky made the board straight away.

  • The nine activities

Fraction bars, a number line, a matching game, a recipe to scale, a puzzle to invent, a sharing story, an error to find, a two-step word problem and a comic.

  • The points

"Give each square 10, 20 or 30 points by difficulty. Students need 60 points." Sparky made row 1 worth 10, row 2 worth 20 and row 3 worth 30, and rewrote the directions.

  • What to check

The math was right: 1/2 + 1/3 is 5/6, not 2/5, and 3 batches of 3/4 cup is 2 1/4 cups. One cell showed "$0 to $3" where Sparky wrote 0 to 3, so read every square before you print.

Turn it into a board students click

After the points, the teacher asked "Can you make this an interactive choice board my students can click?" Sparky built the same nine squares as an interactive page. Students click squares to pick them, a bar counts their points toward 60, and a message appears when they get there. Reset clears their picks. This is the board Sparky made in Flint, with two 30-point squares picked.

Frequently asked questions

What is a choice board?

A grid of activities on the same skill, usually 3 by 3, from which students choose what to do. It gives students a say in how they practice and show what they learned, while every square works on the same goal.

How do you use a choice board in the classroom?

Hand it out at the start of a unit or work period, explain the rule for choosing, and check squares off as students finish. Students can work on different squares at the same time.

Is a tic-tac-toe board a choice board?

Yes. A tic-tac-toe board is a 3 by 3 choice board where students complete three squares in a row. Write that rule on the directions line of the template.
