School improvement plan
Attach your school's test scores, attendance and survey results. Sparky writes the school improvement plan from them: priorities with the evidence behind each, SMART goals, strategies, action steps with owners and dates, and a monitoring plan.

How to write a school improvement plan with Sparky
Attach your data
Attach your test results, attendance, discipline and survey data, and type one line, such as "Write a school improvement plan from our data."
Read the draft
Sparky picks the priorities your data shows, sets each goal from its baseline and marks the targets as proposed. Ask for changes in the same chat.
Add the details
Ask for action steps with owners and dates, a family summary or slides for staff. Save the plan to Google Drive, download it as a Word file or print it.
What goes in a school improvement plan
A data snapshot
Every measure you attached, by year and student group, in one table your team can check.
Priorities with the evidence
Each problem with the numbers behind it and the students most affected, such as a math decline steepest for English learners.
SMART goals
A baseline, a target and a date for each priority, with targets for the student groups furthest behind.
Strategies
What teachers and teams will do differently, such as small-group intervention and regrouping after each formative check.
Action steps with owners and dates
Steps for each goal from this month to June, each with a role that owns it and a target date.
A monitoring plan
Who reviews which measure and how often, so the team knows in February whether a goal is on track.
Ways school leaders use it
SMART goals from your data
Goals with a baseline, a target and a deadline for the whole school. Share your baselines, or ask for goals with blanks to fill in. For one team's goal from one test, use the SMART goals card on the PLC agenda page.
A needs assessment
A planning document for your leadership team: the steps, a school profile to fill in and the data to gather for each area.
A 90-day action plan
Your plan's goals turned into three monthly phases, each with actions, an owner and a milestone.
A mid-year progress check
Paste winter results next to each goal, and Sparky marks it on track or behind and suggests next steps.

Frequently asked questions
Is the school improvement plan writer free?
Yes. It's free for principals, assistant principals, coaches and teachers.
What should be included in a school improvement plan?
A short summary, the data the plan rests on, two to four priorities with the evidence for each, a SMART goal for each priority, the strategies, action steps with an owner and a date, and how progress will be monitored. Your state or district may require more, such as a budget or a family engagement section.
Can you show an example of a school improvement plan?
The demo at the top of this page is one. Sparky wrote it for an example middle school from three years of made-up state test, attendance, discipline and survey results. It is shortened to two of the plan's four priorities.
How do I write an effective school improvement plan?
Pick a few priorities your data shows clearly, set each goal from a baseline you will measure again in spring, give every action step an owner and a date, and put a mid-year check on the calendar before the year gets busy. Sparky drafts all of it in a few minutes, so your leadership team can spend its meeting on the decisions.
Does Sparky make up numbers?
Sparky writes goals from the results you give it. With no data attached, it asks for your test scores, attendance or other baselines first. Its targets are labeled as proposed goals, not results. Check every number against your own data before you share the plan.
What data should I attach?
Whatever your plan will be judged on: state test results by grade and student group, benchmark or interim scores, chronic absenteeism, discipline referrals, and staff, student or family survey results. A spreadsheet, a CSV or a PDF of your state report card works, and you can import files from Google Drive or OneDrive.
Can I share the plan with my leadership team?
Save it to your Google Drive as a Google Doc and share it there, or download it as a Word file. You can also copy it or print it.
