Syllabus generator

Name the course and grade, and Sparky drafts a syllabus: overview, learning goals, unit outline, grading and class policies. Anything only your school knows goes in brackets for you to fill in, never made up.

A teacher asks for a 9th grade biology syllabus in a doc. Sparky drafts it right away, with the teacher's name, room and dates in brackets, and asks for the teacher's name, room and grade weights

How the syllabus generator works

  1. Name the course

Type the course and grade, such as "9th grade biology". Attach last year's syllabus or your course guide if you have one.

  2. Read the draft

Sparky writes every section and puts brackets where your school's details go. It may write in the chat; ask for it "in a doc" to get a document you can print or share.

  3. Fill in what only you know

Send your name, room, grade weights and policies in one message. Sparky adds them to the same document.

What goes in it

  • Goals and a unit outline

Learning goals for the year and the units in order, each with what students study.

  • Your grading and policies

Grade weights, late work, absences and make-up work, as you set them.

  • Brackets, not guesses

Dates, room numbers, textbooks and policies Sparky doesn't know stay in brackets, so nothing reaches families that you didn't write.

  • Built from your materials

Attach your pacing guide, course guide or last year's syllabus, and the units and wording come from it.

  • Expectations students can follow

Classroom behavior, lab safety and academic integrity, including how students may use AI tools in your class.

  • Changes in the same document

Ask for a shorter overview or a new section, or edit the document yourself. The syllabus updates in place.

Ways teachers use it

  • A new course

A first syllabus for a course you haven't taught before, to shape before the year starts.

  • Your school's template

Your school's required headings and order, filled in for each course you teach.

  • A version for families

A short, plain-language version for back-to-school night or the first family email.

  • A week-by-week schedule

Topics week by week, built from the dates you give for the first day, the last day and days off.

  • "I created two activities to help teachers integrate Flint into their lessons. The first uses our AI policy; teachers select the targeted AI usage level and Flint suggests appropriate lessons. The second helps teachers plan next year's curriculum."

  • "I have used Flint as an intro to a new unit, assessment mid-unit, aide in the writing process, and practice/prep for assessments. I find that my colleagues and I get more nuanced and successful in building activities the more we practice. :)"

Frequently asked questions

Is the syllabus generator free?

Yes. It's free for teachers, and there's no limit on how many syllabi you can make.

What goes in the syllabus?

A course overview, learning goals, a unit outline, materials, class expectations, a grading approach and key policies such as late work and absences. Ask for any other section your school expects.

Will it make up my school's policies?

No. Sparky doesn't invent policies, dates, grading weights or required materials. It leaves them in [brackets] until you tell it, then fills them in.

Can it follow my school's syllabus template?

Yes. Attach the template, last year's syllabus or your course guide as a PDF or Word file, and Sparky fills it in for this course. You can also import files from Google Drive or OneDrive.

Can it make a calendar with dates?

Yes, from the dates you give. Send your first day, last day and days off, and ask for a week-by-week schedule. Sparky adds a table of school weeks with each week's unit, skips the weeks off and sets the unit lengths to match. It won't guess dates you haven't given.

Can I download the syllabus as a Google Doc, Word file or PDF?

Ask for it in a doc. The document has buttons to copy it, print it, save it to Google Drive as a Google Doc, or download it as a Word file. For a PDF, press Print and choose Save as PDF.
